We are Staffies exists to celebrate Staffies and to challenge the ignorance in public perception of them.
We are a family of three - two vegan humans and one Staffie, Rollo (above), who was the inspiration for our cause. We're based in Nottingham, UK, and are active in events and activities related to rescue dogs.
Rollo's story
Rollo is a rescue Staffie whose jaw is too short for his tongue. The result is a sort of perma-raspberry where his tongue hangs out. He loves everyone unconditionally and lives for tennis balls.
In 2013 we were finally in a position to do something we'd wanted for a while: to home a rescue dog. We were never going to go to a breeder, who merely exacerbate the problem of homeless dogs and even profit from the situation. Off we went to Radcliffe-on-Trent RSPCA.
"We're not here to choose a dog," we told them. After all, you wouldn't choose a foster child based on colour, appearance etc. Instead, we simply asked who'd been here for a long time. We went to the special area they have where you can meet the dogs and see whether you'd like to adopt them.
They brought us out four dogs. All were beautiful, and we often wonder what became of the other three. We "chose" Rollo purely because he was the first they brought out. The rest, as they say, is history.
Apparently Rollo hadn't been abused, thankfully, but was simply abandoned. Unexpectedly, he was actually micro-chipped; the RSPCA tracked his owners, who said they didn't want him. Oh well; if only they knew what they're missing from such a wonderful dog.
